Schools that turn off Google's AI will lose search too starting in 2027

Starting in early 2027, Google will require schools to accept AI features for student accounts or lose access to Google Search entirely, with Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Search off by default but each individually switchable. Schools that enable search must choose between full AI overviews and AI chat, or a "Guided Learning" mode; a version of search without AI is no longer offered. Google education VP Chris Phillips said search and AI are too tightly fused to separate, and education professor Morgan Polikoff called the move a case of the tech industry pushing AI onto people.
