China's first AI-generated film is a flop. Some still see it as the future

The Guardian reports that Sanxingdui: Future Past, China's first fully AI-generated film, earned just 1.7m yuan (£191,000) at the box office despite costing "tens of millions" to make, with all visuals and some sound effects created by AI and editing done by humans. Despite the flop, film industry workers say investors believe AI films are the future because they can be far cheaper, and one state media commentary said the film may go down in cinematic history as the starting point of what came next.
