Google will let schools disable its AI tools, but not without sacrificing Search

Google announced it will disable AI tools for K-12 students next year unless school administrators explicitly turn them on, affecting Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search. Because AI features are now integrated into Search, schools that restrict AI entirely will lose access to Google Search, a Google VP told The New York Times. The change was announced alongside the launch of Guided Learning in schools, an AI tutor tool unveiled earlier this year.
