The End of AI Frontiers

A former Microsoft researcher recounts organizing the AI Frontiers group within Microsoft Research after ChatGPT's release to pursue coherent, agent-focused and fundamental research efforts, and describes its September reorg into Microsoft AI, whose scaling-only philosophy he found incompatible. He states that AI Frontiers is over, that there will be no internships with the group in the coming year, and explains why he did not return to MSR.
