Understand this story
Amavie released an open-source browser extension that can export a user's Character.AI chat history, conversations, and self-created characters, personas and memory boxes to a single local JSON file in a matter of minutes; the official export takes 3 to 4 weeks. Amavie says the exported file stays only on the user's device and is not uploaded anywhere. The extension supports Chromium browsers such as Chrome, Edge and Brave (the Chrome Web Store version is still under review) and Firefox (the add-on store version is still under review), and requires Node.js 20 or newer to run.

- Hacker News AIShow HN: Export your Character.AI chats in minutes – open-source, runs locally
An open-source browser extension saves your Character.AI chats, characters, personas and memory boxes to a single local JSON file (plus optional plain text) in minutes, versus the official export's 3 to 4 weeks. It uses only activeTab and scripting permissions, reads without modifying anything, talks only to Character.AI with your signed-in session, and includes no analytics, servers or remote code. A free open-source viewer at amavie.ai/character-ai-export reads the file in your browser; the extension is MIT licensed and not affiliated with Character.AI.
